Biography
Federica Battisti received the Laurea (Master of Science) in Electronic Engineering from Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Rome, Italy, in July 2006.
From August 2005 to February 2006 she worked as a Research Assistant at Tampere International Center for Signal Processing (TICSP) in Tampere University of Technology (TUT) located in Tampere, Finland. Her work in TICSP resulted in her master thesis titled ‘Data hiding techniques in the Fibonacci domain’. During her staying in TICSP, she had been involved in a Human Visual System based image quality assessment project. This work was a part of a bigger research to obtain perceptually reliable objective image quality metrics.
From November 2006 to November 2009, she has been a Ph.D. student in Telecommunication Engineering at Università degli Studi Roma Tre. During this period, from June to July 2008 she was a visiting researcher in the Groupe Multimedia, in the Département Traitement du Signal et des Images of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris under the supervision of Prof. B. Pesquet- Popescu.
From May to August 2009 she was a visiting researcher in the Departamento de Teoría de la Señal y las Comunicaciones of the Universidad de Vigo in Spain under the supervision of Prof. P. Comesana Alfaro.
In March 2010 she received the Ph.D. degree with a thesis titled ‘Multimedia data hiding based on human perception characteristics’.
From December 2010 to July 2020 she has been non-tenured Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering at Università degli Studi Roma Tre.
She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Engineering at University of Padova.
She is Chair of the IEEE YP Affinity Group Italy section (November 2020 – present).
She is Vice-Chair of the IEEE P3333.1.4_WG – Human factors for the Quality Assessment of Light Field Imaging Working Group (November 2020 – present).
She is an IEEE Senior member (2015 – present).
She serves as Associate Editor of Frontiers in Signal Processing (2020 – present).
She serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (2019 – present).
She serves as Associate Editor of ELSEVIER Signal Processing: Image Communication (2018 – present).
She serves as Associate Editor of EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing (2017 – present).
She is member of the Visual Information Processing Special Area Team of EURASIP (2017 – present).
Research
Her main research interests are signal and image processing with focus on subjective quality analysis of visual contents.
Her research activity started with the design and implementation of watermarking techniques for granting the ownership protection of images.
The investigation on this topic led to the study of quality issues related to the watermark invisibility that resulted in the definition of new image quality metrics and in the contribution to the creation of a widely used database for quality metrics benchmark.
The interest on image quality was later extended to video and multi-view imaging.
Currently, the area of interest is in the light-field imaging both for efficient depth map estimation and for quality assessment.

The ISEEYOO Project aims at designing and implementing an anomaly detection system for monitoring the information collected from a network of Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs) in the communication phase. It is founded under the University of Padova “SEED Research Grants”.

The VOLIERA project aims at defining a multi-sensor positioning system for the railway scenario. The positioning framework involves GNSS, IMU, LIDAR, stereo cameras and time-of-flight cameras. VOLIERA is co-funded by the ESA – NAVISP – 2 program.

abstract = {Augmented reality is one of the enabling technologies of the upcoming future. Its usage in working and learning scenarios may lead to a better quality of work and training by helping the operators during the most crucial stages of processes. Therefore, the automatic detection of stress during augmented reality experiences can be a valuable support to prevent consequences on people's health and foster the spreading of this technology. In this work, we present the design of a non-invasive stress assessment approach. The proposed system is based on the analysis of the head movements of people wearing a Head Mounted Display while performing stress-inducing tasks. First, we designed a subjective experiment consisting of two stress-related tests for data acquisition. Then, a statistical analysis of head movements has been performed to determine which features are representative of the presence of stress. Finally, a stress classifier based on a combination of Support Vector Machines has been designed and trained. The proposed approach achieved promising performances thus paving the way for further studies in this research direction.},

abstract = {Traditional image and video enhancement techniques do not consider the subjective preferences of the user, who might be interested in modifying or highlighting specific elements of a scene. In fact, most image or video post-processing techniques are applied to the entire image or frame. In this work, a framework for selective video enhancement is presented. It is based on an adaptive multi-resolution edge enhancement technique performed in the Laguerre-Gauss complex wavelet domain. In the proposed scheme, edges are selectively enhanced or attenuated according to the inputs of the user, taking into account the characteristics of the content, the response of the human visual system, and the masking effects induced by textured background. Two scenarios have been implemented and tested: (i) an interactive video editing system, where the user selects the objects to enhance through a graphical interface and the system automatically propagates the selection through the following video frames belonging to the same shot, (ii) a perceptually-driven technique to improve the quality of RGB plus Depth videos, which uses depth maps as additional features to guide the enhancement.},

abstract = {The transport sector is experiencing a fast and revolutionary development, moving toward the deployment of autonomous vehicles. Thus, the accuracy of the position information and the integrity of the navigation system have become key factors. In this article, we address the problem of the enhancement of the integrity of the position provided by a global navigation satellite system receiver by exploiting sensor fusion. To this aim, we estimate the lateral offset and heading of the vehicle with respect to a georeferenced roadway centerline from the images supplied by an on-board camera. Moreover, we perform integrity monitoring based on the implementation of the solution separation in the parity space. The numerical results indicate that the use of sensor fusion and digital map allows us to attain a longitudinal protection level reduction with respect to the case in which sensor fusion is not exploited. More specifically, a decrease of about 70% is achieved when a single constellation is used, while reduction is less relevant, about 15%, when two constellations are employed.},

abstract = {Light Field imaging systems allow capturing a larger amount of information of a scene with respect to conventional cameras. In fact, light field cameras record, in a single shot, multiple instances of the same scene taken from slightly different points of view. This enables new applications, like digital refocusing and free-viewpoint content creation. The main drawback of this hardware is in the trade-off between spatial and angular resolution, which has an impact on the depth of field of the refocused images. In this paper we propose a technique for increasing the depth of field by means of mul-tifocus fusion and, at the same time, for enhancing the quality of the content. The available views are processed in the Laguerre Gauss transform domain to perform a selective enhancement that sharpens the selected depth layer and blurs the others. The performed experiments prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach.},
